Downtown Huntington Beach Community Guide | Living, Dining & Real Estate

Prop 2

Living in Downtown Huntington Beach

Downtown Huntington Beach offers something few Southern California communities can match. Here, the beach is not simply a place you visit. It becomes part of everyday life.

Residents can walk or bike to the Huntington Beach Pier, Main Street, restaurants, coffee shops and the sand. Yet just a short distance away are parks, schools, golf, tennis and miles of trails.

That combination gives Downtown Huntington Beach its unique character.

The Huntington Beach Pier and Beach

At the center of the community is the Huntington Beach Pier at Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway.

The pier stretches approximately 1,850 feet into the Pacific Ocean and is one of Huntington Beach’s most recognizable landmarks.

This is also the heart of Surf City USA.

Surfers gather on both sides of the pier. Locals also surf farther north at The Cliffs, another longtime Huntington Beach surf spot.

Along the beach, residents enjoy walking, running, volleyball, fishing, sunsets and the Huntington Beach tradition of gathering around a beach bonfire.

Bike the Huntington Beach Coast

One of the best ways to experience Downtown Huntington Beach is by bicycle.

The paved Huntington Beach bike trail, often called the Ocean Strand, follows roughly 10 miles of coastline. Riders can travel from the northern Huntington Beach and Sunset Beach area near Warner Avenue south toward the Santa Ana River and Newport Beach.

The route passes Dog Beach, the Pier, Pacific City and miles of open sand.

For many Downtown residents, a beach cruiser may be almost as useful as a car.

Main Street, Dining and Pacific City

Main Street provides the classic Huntington Beach experience. Restaurants, surf shops, boutiques, coffee shops and nightlife stretch inland from the Pier.

Oceanfront favorites include Duke’s Huntington Beach and Sandy’s Beach Shack.

A few blocks into the neighborhood, residents have their own local favorites. These include HB Corner Market on 11th Street, Fiesta Grill, Chronic Tacos and Sweet Elle Café.

Just south of the Pier is Pacific City, an open-air shopping and dining destination overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It offers restaurants, shops, gathering areas and plenty of places to watch a Huntington Beach sunset.

Oceanfront Hotels and the Resort District

Downtown Huntington Beach also has one of Orange County’s strongest collections of coastal hotels.

The area includes Paséa Hotel & Spa, The Waterfront Beach Resort, Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort and Spa, and Kimpton Shorebreak Huntington Beach Resort.

Together, these hotels help create the resort atmosphere along Pacific Coast Highway while keeping restaurants, events and entertainment close to local residents.

Huntington Dog Beach

Dog owners have another major reason to love the area.

Huntington Dog Beach stretches along Pacific Coast Highway from around Goldenwest Street north toward Seapoint Avenue. Dogs can enjoy the sand and surf while owners take in one of the most recognizable stretches of coastline in Orange County.

The area’s dog culture also includes special gatherings and events. One of the best known is SoCal Corgi Beach Day, which has grown from a small meetup into a popular Huntington Beach tradition.

Major Downtown Huntington Beach Events

Downtown Huntington Beach is also the stage for some of Southern California’s most recognizable coastal events.

The U.S. Open of Surfing brings world-class surfing and large crowds to the area surrounding the Pier.

Professional beach volleyball also returns to the sand with the AVP Huntington Beach Open.

Each fall, the Pacific Airshow fills the sky above Huntington Beach with military and civilian aviation performances. Depending on the year, spectators may see demonstrations from teams such as the U.S. Navy Blue Angels or U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds.

These events create a level of energy that few beach communities can match.

Huntington Beach Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks

One of Downtown Huntington Beach’s most beloved traditions is the city’s Fourth of July celebration.

Huntington Beach has hosted its Independence Day parade for more than a century, making it one of the community’s longest-running traditions.

The celebration brings residents and visitors into Downtown for a full day of patriotic festivities. The parade travels through the Downtown area, filling the streets with marching bands, community groups, local organizations and families.

Later that evening, attention turns toward the ocean for the Fourth of July fireworks display near the Huntington Beach Pier.

For Downtown residents, it is one of those special occasions when the neighborhood truly becomes the gathering place for the entire community.

Living close enough to walk or bike to the festivities is one of the unique lifestyle advantages of calling Downtown Huntington Beach home.

Surf City Nights, Farmers Markets and Local Events

Every Tuesday, Main Street becomes Surf City Nights.

Several blocks close to vehicle traffic while residents and visitors enjoy farmers market vendors, local artisans, live entertainment and family activities.

Pier Plaza also hosts artisan fairs and community events throughout the year.

These recurring gatherings help Downtown feel like more than a tourist destination. They create a neighborhood where residents regularly see familiar faces and connect with the community.

International Surfing Museum and Surf City History

Huntington Beach’s surfing culture is not limited to the waves.

Located in Downtown, the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum helps tell the story of surfing and the people who helped shape the sport.

Visitors can learn more about surf history, famous surfers and Huntington Beach’s long connection to surf culture.

Nearby, the Surfing Walk of Fame honors influential surfers and personalities who have contributed to the sport.

Together with the Pier and Huntington Beach’s legendary surf breaks, these attractions help explain why the city has earned the nickname Surf City USA.

For residents, they are also a reminder that Downtown Huntington Beach has its own history, identity and traditions that go well beyond the beach itself.

Art, History and Downtown Culture

Downtown also has a creative and historic side.

The Huntington Beach Art Center along Main Street provides exhibitions, programs and community events.

Visitors can also explore historic Downtown sites and learn more about the people, businesses and buildings that helped shape Huntington Beach over the past century.

These cultural attractions add another dimension to Downtown living.

Central Park, Horses, Golf and Outdoor Recreation

Beach life is only part of the story.

Nearby Huntington Central Park covers approximately 350 acres and offers lakes, walking and biking paths, open fields, playgrounds and recreation areas.

Within Central Park, Shipley Nature Center protects native California habitat and provides peaceful walking trails.

The nearby Huntington Beach Urban Forest offers another place for walking, cycling and enjoying nature.

Horse owners and riders also have access to the Huntington Central Park Equestrian Center, riding facilities and equestrian trails.

For golf and racquet sports, nearby The Huntington Club in Seacliff offers private golf, tennis and pickleball facilities.

Community Facilities and Schools

Downtown residents also have neighborhood recreation close to home.

The Huntington Beach City Gym and Pool on Palm Avenue has long served the local community with recreation and fitness opportunities. Nearby Memorial Hall also plays a role in local community activities.

Nearby public schools include:

  • Agnes L. Smith Elementary School
  • Ethel Dwyer Middle School
  • Huntington Beach High School
  • Seacliff Elementary School

Huntington Beach High School sits directly on Main Street, making it a familiar landmark for Downtown residents.

School attendance boundaries can change. Buyers should always confirm the assigned schools for a specific property directly with the applicable school district.

What Is It Like to Live in Downtown Huntington Beach?

Perhaps Downtown Huntington Beach’s greatest attraction is not any single restaurant, event or beach.

It is the ability to combine them.

You can bike to the Pier in the morning, grab coffee in the neighborhood, walk your dog along the coast, meet friends at Pacific City and watch the sunset without ever leaving your community.

You can also walk to a Fourth of July parade, watch fireworks over the Pacific, attend a professional surfing competition or spend a quiet afternoon exploring Central Park.

That combination of coastal lifestyle, walkability, community traditions, surf culture and outdoor recreation is what continues to make Downtown Huntington Beach one of the most distinctive places to live in Orange County.

Thinking About Buying or Selling in Downtown Huntington Beach?

Real estate can change significantly from one Downtown block to another.

Homes closer to the ocean, properties along the numbered streets, condos, townhomes and newer coastal homes can each have different values, features and buyer expectations.

Understanding those differences is important when deciding how to buy, sell or position a Downtown Huntington Beach property.

If you are considering buying or selling a home in Downtown Huntington Beach, I would be happy to help you understand the neighborhood, current inventory and what makes your particular location unique.
