Why I Love Calling Downtown Huntington Beach Home
By Mike Rains, Realtor with First Team Seacliff
I’ve been helping clients find their perfect home in Downtown Huntington Beach for nearly 18 years, as part of my 23 years in real estate. Every day I’m reminded: this place isn’t just a zip code. It’s a lifestyle. Living right up from Dog Beach, sand between your toes, salty breezes, sunsets, surf, and the kind of community that cares — that’s why I do what I do.
The Coastal Lifestyle — It’s Real
If you wake up early, you can hear the ocean waves. I often walk my dog down to Dog Beach before sunrise. It’s peaceful, it’s beautiful, and it reminds me that life here moves at a pace that most folks only dream about. Being so close to the beach means I get to introduce buyers to a life where you can have a surfboard in your car, flip-flops as primary footwear, and the ocean as your backyard.
And it’s not just the natural beauty. The boardwalk is one of my favorite parts of the day: riding a bike, strolling in the evening, watching the sun drop into the Pacific, maybe grabbing a coffee or stopping at one of the shops along Main Street. There’s something magical about golden hour here.
Events That Make Downtown Come Alive
Downtown isn’t just beautiful — it pulses with life.
-
U.S. Open of Surfing — One of the world’s biggest surfing competitions, held every summer along the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier. It brings pros, fans, energy, and a surf-culture spotlight right here. Wikipedia+2surfcityusa.com+2
-
Pacific Airshow — Every October, the skies over Huntington Beach fill with jets, stunt planes, military demonstrations, and aerial spectaculars. For those of us who love the beach, the waves, and community, it’s a highlight of the year. surfcityusa.com+3surfcityusa.com+3Pacific Airshow Huntington Beach+3
-
Fourth of July Parade & Fireworks — The Independence Day celebration here takes full advantage: parade down Main Street, community gathering, then fireworks over the ocean. It’s nostalgic, patriotic, and one of the best evenings you’ll spend.
There are also countless volleyball tournaments, surf competitions, beach volleyball, and more, often centered around the pier, the beach, and Main Street. The pier doesn’t just look great – it’s the stage for so much of what makes Surf City USA what it is. surfcityusa.com+1
Favorites: Restaurants, Shops, Hotels
When I’m not showing homes, you’ll often find me catching up with clients over good food, strolling through shops, or recommending hotels to folks relocating. Some places I love:
-
Main Street has so many gems — cafés for brunch, places with ocean views for dinner, spots you can pop into after a beach walk.
-
Pier Area / Pacific City: Great restaurants, boutique shops, places to watch surfers, to watch the sunset, and to feel like you’re always on vacation.
-
Beautiful hotels right by the beach: perfect for visiting family, for new clients coming in, or for people wanting a stay-cation feel even when they’re locals.
(If you want, I can send you a list of my top five go-to restaurants and hotels in the area.)
Why I Serve Downtown
After 18 years here, I know the streets, I know the market, and I know people. Buying or selling in Downtown Huntington Beach is different than farther inland. There are unique challenges: proximity to the ocean, special zoning, knowing how amenities (walkability, beach access, views) influence value. I love helping people navigate that.
What makes me proud:
-
Seeing families settle into homes where they can walk to the beach, pop out to dinner, ride their bike along the boardwalk.
-
Helping retirees downsize to something still close to the sand.
-
Guiding investors who want a property that draws renters who love lifestyle as much as location.
What My Clients Say
These are the moments that fuel me — not the commission, but knowing someone is living the dream they came here to Huntington Beach for.
If you’re thinking of moving Downtown, or just curious what it’s like living in Huntington Beach — drop me a line. I’d love to show you around, share my favorite spots for tacos and help you imagine life here. This is more than real estate to me — it’s home.
Best,
Mike Rains
